5 Things We Love about Living in Ocean Shores
Ocean Shores is a small coastal town in Washington state and known for it’s gorgeous beaches, but that’s not all. In this video we are going to talk about the 5 reasons why we love living in one of the most underrated cities in Wa, Ocean Shores.
What we love about living in Ocean Shores is an obvious one, the Beaches. Check out our videos where we explore our top 3 favorite beaches. We’ll link that here. Michaela is pretty close to the north jetty and for those of you who like to storm watch, in the winter season, the waves can get pretty crazy!
If you saw my reel on last week on Instagram you’ll see a little bit of my first time driving down watching the waves come in, the waves come in over the jetty and can reach higher than the 5 story buildings it was absolutely incredible to witness in person!
If storm watching isn’t your thing, In the summer there’s really no place better to be. It stays cool and is usually in the high 60’s and low 70’s. In fact, Seattle had a heat wave last summer and people came out here in droves just to get away from the heat. If you’re thinking about purchasing a second home for the summer this is the perfect place to do that.
The second thing that we love about Ocean Shores is that the cost of living is lower compared to the Seattle area or pretty much any metropolitan area. The average Home in Ocean Shores is $330k compared to Seattle where its $830k and even Tacoma at $430k.
Yes, for now homes are still so much more affordable, but that could slowly change. Ocean Shores experienced a 30% price increase in homes in just the last 12 months compared to Seattle at 8%. Now that more people are getting the opportunity to work from home, more and more of those people are moving here full time to take advantage of small town life and lower property taxes.
That’s right. And Washington state by the way doesn’t have a federal income tax, so that is a big draw and one of the many reasons people move here from other states. The third reason we love living here is the fresh seafood. If you love fresh seafood, it’s literally right in your backyard. And if you happen to like catching your seafood, there are so many ways to do that here. For fishers, Duck Lake is regularly stocked with rainbow trout. Other fish you can catch On the coast are Salmon and Halibut which we love!
Yes, and we also love the fresh Dungeness crab that our husbands like to catch. Sometimes we’ll go out on the boat with them while they’re crabbing. It’s such an adventure because we see all kinds of wildlife in their natural habitat. This video was taken just right in between Damon Point and Westport. Westport has a huge variety of Salt water fishing as well and calls itself the sport fishing capital of the world.
Fun times! This leads us to the 4th reason why we love Ocean Shores the nature and wildlife. The most common animal I see while living here are the deer for sure! It’s very common to be sitting at the kitchen table and just seeing 4 or 5 deer grazing on the grass out the window. We were just sitting and talking at Michaela’s house the other day and outside walks by a piebald deer which are really rare to see.
Yes, we had to look it up to see what kind of deer it was! Other animals that are common to see around the area are if you love bird watching are seagulls, pelicans, cranes, and even snowy white owls. And if you like whale watching, there are plenty of Grey whales here.
And the fifth and final thing we love about ocean shores…the traffic! Because we’re so far from the major cities, we don’t have to worry about getting stuck in rush hour traffic. Are there some things we miss about the city? Yes, but we are only a 1 ½ hour drive from Olympia and about 2 ½ hours from Seattle, so we can go and make a day trip any time we want.
